About Lumera Learning

A school-based music therapy practice in Rochester, NY — and the story of a light that was already shining.

Our story

Where did Lumera come from?

Lumera didn't start from scratch — it started from proof. For years, our team worked as the schools division of Spectrum Creative Arts, building something distinct inside it: our own methods, our own culture, and deep trust with the districts we served. The school work was never a side project. It had its own rhythm, its own standards, and a team that thought about one thing — what it takes to do this well inside a school building.

Eventually the name caught up with the work. Lumera Learning is that same team and that same practice, stepping into its own light — with a name and a structure purpose-built for what we actually do.

This isn't a startup. It's an evolution.

Why we exist

Why does this work matter?

The educational system wasn't designed with every mind in mind. Students who process the world through non-standard pathways are too often handed labels instead of strategies, and interventions built around compliance rather than growth. We exist to change that.

Lumera partners with schools to build inclusive, affirming environments where every student can thrive — using creative, individualized, neuroaffirming music therapy to illuminate each learner's path, and equipping the teams around them to see and support it. Our name is our mission: shining a light on every mind.

What we believe

What do our values look like in practice?

These four aren't wall art. They're behavioral commitments — you should be able to observe them in how we communicate, deliver services, and build relationships.

01 · Clear is kind

We say the hard things clearly.

Ambiguity creates anxiety — for students, for school teams, for everyone. When something is difficult to say, we say it plainly rather than softening it into confusion. Clarity is a form of care.

02 · Learning & unlearning

We're willing to be changed.

We recognize that knowledge is fluid and pursue growth relentlessly — including revising what we thought we knew. The field evolves. Students teach us. We show up ready to be changed by what we encounter.

03 · Lead with curiosity

Questions before conclusions.

Curiosity is the engine of neuroaffirming practice. We approach each interaction with our students and teams by presuming competence and diligently asking "why?" to inform how we operate.

04 · Students shape our systems

We build around the learner.

We don't retrofit students into systems — we build systems around students. The learner's needs drive session design, goal-setting, documentation, and how we communicate with the teams around them.

The people

Who's behind Lumera?

The team our school districts have come to know and love over the years is continuing that work under the Lumera name. We're thrilled to bring the same passion, excitement, and love of learning to our schools, with our core team of therapists.
