Lumera Learning is hiring a full-time school-based music therapist (MT-BC) to join our team of five in the greater Rochester, NY area — September 1, 2026 start. Part-time therapists — we want to hear from you too!

The role

What does a school-based music therapist do at Lumera?

You’ll provide IEP services — individual, small group, and consultation — and curriculum group services to students ages 3–22 in special education programs across the greater Rochester area, from early intervention preschool through grade 12. You’ll identify and monitor IEP goals, run intake evaluations, document weekly, and collaborate with school teams — with a music therapy team behind you the whole way. Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–3:30 PM. No evenings, no weekends.

September 1, 2026

Location

School buildings across the greater Rochester area; travel between buildings.

Credential

MT-BC by time of hire. School experience preferred, not required.

Compensation

What are the pay and benefits?

Full-time (primary opening)

$45,800–$56,800/year

Salaried, year-round 12-month position, plus $2,000 toward relocation. Experience, education, and relevant certifications considered in salary. Pay evaluated twice a year.

Part-time (also considered)

$32–$36/hour

Fully paid planning, documentation, driving time, meetings, and supervision — every hour counts, not just session time. Opportunities to expand as interested and able. Pay evaluated annually.

Who we’re looking for

Is this role a fit for you?

You don’t need school experience — you need the credential, the musicianship, and genuine interest in work that’s equal parts clinical and collaborative.

  • Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) by time of hire
  • Established musical skills in voice, guitar, percussion, and songwriting
  • Creativity and experience with original intervention development
  • Experience with neurodivergent and disabled school-aged students and young adults across a range of diagnoses
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
  • Comfortable sharing spaces and traveling between buildings
  • Compassionate, flexible, team-oriented, and able to manage deadlines independently
  • Previous school experience preferred — not required!

You won’t be doing this alone.

Most school-based music therapists are the only one in their building. Here you’d have a whole team of them — together most weeks for supervision, co-planning, and the kind of backup you only get from people who do exactly what you do.
